ASCE RI Eggsploring Engineering 2020
ASCE RI introduced students to the wonders of engineering through the showing of the inspiring documentary film Dream Big: Engineering Our World and then an egg drop event. The students worked with civil engineers to design and build containers that kept an egg safe when dropped from the Sky Bridge at WaterFire Arts Center and then from a lift.
ASCE ERYMC 2020
ASCE RI YMG Members Katie Scancarello and Ashlee Tyce attended the 2020 Eastern Region Younger Member Council (ERYMC) in Philadelphia, PA. Here they networked with other ASCE members and gather knowledge on ASCE YMG practices. At the ERYMC 2020 Awards Banquet Katie Scancarello was awarded the ASCE Outstanding Younger Member in Community Activities.
ASCE RI Trivia NIGHT 2020
RI engineering firms teamed up against each other and ASCE RI Student Members from URI and RWU to play Trivia at The Jake in Providence, RI. Trivia questions and rounds included some on Civil Engineering, Rhode Island, Music, Movies, Sports and more. Congratulations to Beta Group who won first, Diprete with second and Pare and Steere who tied for third.
ASCE YMG & PES 2019 Holiday Toys for Tots Social
ASCE RI, PES and their friends and family gathered at the Malted Barley in Providence, RI to celebrate the Holiday season. Attendees brought unwrapped gifts to be donated to Toys for Tots.
November 2019 Dinner Meeting
The ASCE RI Section’s November Dinner Meeting took place at Spain Restaurant in Narraganset, RI. At the dinner Roger Williams University (RWU) and University of Rhode Island (URI) ASCE student chapters presented on their plans for the upcoming year. Additionally, Brown University students, Emma Abele and Elizabeth Austin presented on their Mobius Strip Sundial Sculpture, ‘Infinite Possibility’. A Mobius Strip is a three dimensional shape with only one side. It is a loop with a half twist. If you start drawing a line on one surface and continue around, it will cover all sides and comeback on itself. A bore hole in the finished 1200 lb stainless steel sculpture projects a ray of light down onto an inside surface that traces an infinity figure that is calibrated to the months and date. The students discussed the difficulties they had to overcome including how to model the shape in CAD and how to project the path of the sun onto a 3D surface.
Axe Throwing - Centennial Competition
ASCE RI YMG hosted its first friendly competitive Centennial Event - Axe Throwing! The event sold out and was well represented by many Civil Engineering firms throughout Rhode Island. VHB Providence took home the win. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this event a huge success!
RWU Fall 2019 Mock Interviews
Approximately 16 students attended the mock interview session, which was organized by the YMG. Several ASCE members volunteered their time to conduct the interviews to allow students, ranging from Freshman to Seniors, to practice their interviewing skills and prepare for upcoming job interviews.
Federal Hill House Volunteer Day 2019
ASCE RI YMG and friends volunteered at Federal Hill House in Providence, RI. The group helped to relocate a sandbox and perform other yard upgrades for the toddler playground. Thank you to all of our volunteers and to Federal Hill House for hosting us!
October 2019 Dinner Meeting
ASCE RI Section hosted their dinner meeting at Venue 131 in Cumberland, RI. At the meeting Todd Moline, PE, PMP, Construction manager at MWH Constructors presented about the alternative project delivery methods for infrastructure projects.
September 2019 Dinner Meeting
The ASCE RI Section kicked off its Centennial with a thought provoking presentation by Howard Epstein, Ph.D., PE, UConn Professor Emeritus. Howard discussed the major structural failure that caused the Hartford Civic Center Roof Collapse along with other structure failures throughout history. The ASCE RI Centennial Chair, Jim Primeau revealed the Centennial Logo and announced the plans for the year-long celebration.
2019 Pawsox
ASCE YMG hosted its annual PawSox outing at Mccoy Stadium. This year, the rain gave way just in time for the BBQ and game.
Rain Garden Install - June 2019
ASCE RI YMG assisted the Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District and the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission to install a Rain Garden at a residential property in Portsmouth, RI. The event allowed our group to work with the community and educate the public in regards to stormwater management.
SustainPVD Fair 2019
ASCE RI YMG presented a demonstration at SustainPVD Fair in May 2019. The SustainPVD Fair hosted local businesses and community groups to help the community learn more about sustainability through presentations, demonstrations and workshops. ASCE RI YMG performed soda bottle soil filter demonstrations with attendees to highlight the issues of water pollution and the importance of filtration systems.
2019 Annual Banquet
ASCE Members and friends gathered for the RI Section’s 2019 Annual dinner. Kancheepuram "Guna" N. Gunalan, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE, F. ASCE 2019 ASCE President-Elect attended the dinner and swore in the board members. Mr. Lawrence Goldberg, P.E presented on Hurricane Harvey.
2019 Spring Stem Expo
ASCE YMG taught students about Civil Engineering at a STEM Expo. YMG members helped to explain the different strengths associated with various shapes. Ultimately, the kids were able to fold their own paper bridge and see first hand how different shapes and designs can produce a variety of outcomes.
ASCE WTS JOINt Bowling 2019
WTS and ASCE RI YMG hosted a night of bowling for Rhode Island Civil Engineers. Many Rhode Island Civil Engineering Organizations took part and GZA Providence won.
2019 Flyin
ASCE RI sent representatives to the 2019 Legislative Fly-in in DC. RI section representatives were able to meet with other section members from around the country and their respective senators.
ASCE ERYMC 2019
ASCE RI YMG Members Tory Dumas and Sasha Weller attended the 2019 Eastern Region Younger Member Council (ERYMC). Here they were able to network with other ASCE YMG while gaining valuable knowledge on how other YMG’s are run.
2018 toys for tots holiday Social
ASCE YMG teamed up with Providence Engineering Society (PES) to host our annual Holiday Social at The Malted Barley in Providence. Attendees donated unwrapped gifts for Toys for Tots and were able to unwind with appetizers and drinks before the Holiday Season.
October 2018 volunteer Event
ASCE YMG volunteered to help the Federal Hill house build a playhouse and mud kitchen for the kids. YMG members had a great time getting to use their hands to construct instead of their minds to design. Afterwards they rewarded their hard work by relaxing with food and drink at a local bar.
Pawsox 2018
Rhode Island ASCE members and their families joined the ASCE Younger Member Group in sponsoring the 2018 Annual Rhode Island Infrastructure Design Professionals Summer Outing at the Pawtucket Red Sox on August 16, 2018. The event was once again held at the Pre-Game Party Terrace, with a BBQ, drinks and ice cream! The fun, family-friendly event was made possible thanks to our generous sponsors!
Mansfield stem expo 2018
The ASCE RI YMG and ASCE RI section members performed a paper tower activity with students at the Mansfield STEM expo. Students, helped by their parents and ASCE volunteers, tried to build 3ft or taller towers out of paper within the allotted time. The activity helped to teach the attendees about some of the fundamentals of Civil Engineering.
ASCE WTS Joint Bowling 2018
ASCE RI YMG teamed up with WTS to host their annual bowling event. Companies played against each other in a friendly competition. Steere Engineering Company of Warwick, RI took home the win this year.
2017 night at the P-Bruins - Providence, ri
The RI ASCE Younger Member Group met to help cheer on the Providence Bruins as they faced the Hershey Bears. Prior to the game a few members met at Trinity Brewhouse before walking over to the game. This was another great night of away from the office, though, unfortunately the the Bruins lost 4-1 this year.
2017 night at the pawsox - pawtucket, ri
Rhode Island ASCE members and their families joined the ASCE Younger Member Group in sponsoring the 2017 Annual Rhode Island Infrastructure Design Professionals Summer Outing at the Pawtucket Red Sox on August 24, 2017. The fun, family-friendly event was held on the Pre-Game Party Terrace which provided awesome views from left field and plenty of good food. The PawSox rallied late in the game, but it was not enough to overcome the Buffalo Bison lead. The PawSox fell to the Bisons with a final score of 3 to 8.

2017 earth day - providence, ri
Every April the YMG volunteers to help clean parks and beaches in RI. In the past we have helped cleanup around East Matunuck beach. This year we joined the West Broadway Neighboorhood Association and helped to build a public Bocci Court in addition to cleaning up Dexter Park.

ASCE RI Sections hosts their annual dinner banquet at the Squantum Association to inaugurate the new Section Officers.

The YMG hosts a social gathering each spring as a way for people to meet their peers and learn about ways to get involved.
2018 Mock interviews - Kingston, ri
Approximately 15 students attended the mock interview session in April, which was organized by the YMG. Several ASCE members volunteered their time to conduct the interviews to allow graduating seniors practice their interviewing skills and prepare for upcoming job interviews.
